Kozo Mio, born in Nagoya City, graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1947. He initially worked as an art teacher at a junior high school. In 1950, he moved to Kyoto and shifted his focus to Western-style painting, consistently exhibiting his work at the Kofukai (Light Breeze Society).
In 1968, he developed his signature airbrush technique, creating fantastical spaces using trompe-l'œil-like expressions. That same year, he won an Excellence Award at the Japan Art Festival and participated in the São Paulo Biennale the following year. He later taught at Kyoto City University of Arts, mentoring the next generation of artists.
In his later years, he became known for illustrating the covers of the weekly magazine FOCUS. His unique world of blended fiction and reality earned him recognition for what came to be called “the eroticism of empty space.”
