Taiga (Kōno Chūji, 1826–1903) – Ceramic Artist and Successor to Sekihō
Kōno Chūji, known by his artist name Taiga, was born in 1826 and is recognized as the first-generation Taiga. He initially practiced pottery in Ikeda Town, Ibi District, and later relocated to Akasaka, where he studied under the ceramic master Shimizu Onko.
After completing his training, Taiga became the successor to the renowned potter Sekihō. He established a large climbing kiln (noborigama) at a tea estate (ochayashiki) and undertook the challenge of large-scale ceramic production, contributing significantly to the local pottery tradition.
