Seikyoan Shunzan (1893–1965) – Independent Master of Handcrafted Sencha Ware
Seikyoan Shunzan was born in 1893 (Meiji 26) in Yokkaichi, Japan. He began his journey into ceramics at the age of 15, starting with clay preparation and gradually mastering the art of hand-forming (tenebari), a technique he would become especially known for.
His sencha tea utensils, created entirely by hand, combined free-form creativity with refined shapes, giving each piece a uniquely elegant and expressive quality. His works captured the spirit of traditional Japanese tea culture with a personal and artistic touch.
Shunzan was not affiliated with any major kiln or pottery school; instead, he remained a truly independent artist throughout his life, devoted to developing his own ceramic style. He passed away in 1965 (Shōwa 40) at the age of 73.
