Rantei – Kyoto Potter Known for Fine Teapots and Overglaze Decoration
Rantei was a Kyoto-based ceramic artist active from the Bunkyū era (1861–1864). He lived in Otowa-chō, near Gojōzaka (present-day Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto), a historic center of ceramic production.
Rantei primarily specialized in sometsuke (blue-and-white underglaze porcelain), but he also created highly detailed teapots adorned with rich red and multi-colored glazes. Some of his works reflect stylistic similarities to Banko ware, and many of his pieces are marked with the signature “Rantei”.
