Okada Kyūta was an accomplished Kyō-yaki (Kyoto ware) potter active from the late Edo period (Bunsei era, c.1818) through the Taishō era (ending in 1926).
He was particularly renowned as a master of "Tōkyūbishō-yaki" (a refined style of teapot-making), celebrated for his exceptional wheel-throwing skills. His craftsmanship earned him a reputation as one of the finest kyūsu (Japanese teapot) artisans of his time.
For a period, Kyūta is known to have worked with Aoki Mokubei, a leading figure in Raku-style ceramics. As a result, many works attributed to Mokubei are now believed to have been made—or partially executed—by Kyūta himself.
In the classic tea text Sencha Sōgaku (An Early Study of Sencha), Kyūta is described as:
“A refined and cultured gentleman, a master of Tōkyūbishō-yaki, whose teaware is full of elegance and aesthetic charm.”
