Muganraku (Okamoto Jōhō) – The Blind Potter of Remarkable Sensitivity
Okamoto Jōhō, known by the seal name Muganraku, was a blind potter renowned for his extraordinary ability to create delicately hand-built ceramics with remarkably thin walls, despite his loss of sight. His works are characterized by refined craftsmanship and tactile elegance.
There are several theories about his life. One suggests that he was originally a potter from Inuyama, who worked under Mori Yūsestsu before moving to Kuwana, where he eventually lost his vision. After going blind, he retrained himself by shaping clay through touch alone, developing a unique and deeply intuitive style of pottery.
Another account claims that he was a blacksmith by trade, who turned to ceramics after losing his sight in a workplace accident.
In his later years, he is said to have moved to Tokyo, and only a small number of his works survive today. His pieces are signed with the distinctive seal “Muganraku”, meaning “Joy Without Sight”—a name that captures both his condition and his profound artistic spirit.
