Konishi Yusen – Innovator in Modern Tokoname Teaware
Konishi Yusen I was born in 1913 (Taisho 2) and studied under Sekisen I, a master potter. He became known as a pioneering figure in the world of modern Tokoname-yaki teaware, introducing numerous innovative techniques.
Among his most notable contributions was the refinement of the nerikomi technique—layering and kneading different colored clays, originally inspired by methods in Kyoto’s Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu ware). By carving into the surface of the clay, he created intricate, kaleidoscopic patterns. He also mastered the use of the potter’s wheel to produce distinctive "peacock feather" (kujaku-te) designs.
In addition, he invented ceramic tea strainers and designed highly original kyūsu teapots with unique and functional forms, greatly influencing the evolution of artistic and practical teaware in Japan.
