Inoue Motozo (1886–1922) – Master Potter Known for Exceptional Reproductions
Inoue Motozo was born in 1886 as the third son of Iwajiro Tomimoto of Yamagata and later became the adopted son of the Inoue family. His given name was Taizaburo.
From a young age, he trained under Morishita Mokuji, learning the fundamentals of ceramic production. He later received further guidance from his uncle, the second-generation Matsumoto Sankō, deepening his skills as a potter.
Motozo traveled extensively to study various kiln traditions across Japan, including Ise, Yamashiro, Shikoku, and Bizen. Through these experiences, he developed an exceptional eye for ceramics and became especially renowned for his masterful reproductions. His imitations of ancient Korean and Bizen ware were so meticulously crafted that they were often indistinguishable from authentic originals.
Inoue Motozo passed away in 1922, leaving behind a legacy as a highly skilled and discerning artisan in Japanese ceramic history.
