Ina Chozan I (1744–1822) – Pioneer Potter of Tokoname Ware
Ina Chozan I, born Ina Chozaburō in 1744, was a prominent Japanese potter who worked during the mid to late Edo period. He was born on the Chita Peninsula in the Owari region, where the Ina family had long been involved in the production of Tokoname-yaki sake jars.
Chozan broke from family tradition by expanding his focus beyond large sake vessels to create finely crafted items such as teaware and sakeware, pioneering a new direction in Tokoname ceramics.
He is also credited with inventing the technique of white clay (shiradei) decoration, which brought him widespread recognition for its refinement and elegance.
His works are typically stamped with the mark “Chozan” (長三) and are widely known under the name “Chozan-yaki”, a style that left a lasting influence on the Tokoname ceramic tradition.
