志村立美の略歴

志村立美は日本の挿絵画家であり、美人画の専門家としても知られています。彼は群馬県高崎市新町甲百番地の質屋の長男として生まれ、後に横浜市中区に移住しました。志村は神奈川県立神奈川工業高等学校図案科を中退後、1924年に山川秀峰に入門し美人画を修めました。

志村は山川秀峰の推薦を受けて挿絵の活動を始め、新版画と呼ばれる木版画も手がけました。また、彼は肉筆画も制作し、郷土会や青衿会等に出品しました。人気を博し、岩田専太郎と並ぶ人気画家となった志村は、主婦の友・婦女界などの雑誌の口絵などを描き、その名を広く知られるようになりました。

晩年には挿絵活動を休止し、本来の美人画への回帰を見せました。出版美術家連盟会長などを務め、1976年には作品集『美人百態』で日本作家クラブ賞を受賞しました。1980年5月4日、73歳で東京都新宿区の病院で亡くなりました。

Tatsumi Shimura is a Japanese illustrator and an expert in bijin-ga. He was born as the eldest son of a pawnbroker in Shinmachi Kouhyaku, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, and later moved to Naka Ward, Yokohama City. After dropping out of the design course at Kanagawa Prefectural Kanagawa Technical High School, Shimura became a disciple of Shuho Yamakawa in 1924 and mastered painting of beautiful women.

Shimura began his illustration career on the recommendation of Shuho Yamakawa, and also worked on woodblock prints called shin-hanga. He also produced hand-painted paintings and exhibited them at the local community association and the blue collar association. Shimura became popular and became a popular painter on a par with Sentaro Iwata.

In his later years, he stopped his illustration activities and showed a return to the original painting of beautiful women. He served as chairman of the Association of Publishing Artists, and in 1976 won the Japan Artist Club Award for his collection of works, Bijin Hyakutai. On May 4, 1980, he died at the age of 73 at a hospital in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
