島岡達三の略歴

島岡達三は1919年に東京で生まれました。東京工業大学に進学したが、本来の興味は文系分野であり、技術者の道を進むことになったのは時代の流れと父の勧めによるものでした。大学在学中に民芸の美に目覚め、釉薬の研究を行うようになります。

学生時代から濱田庄司の弟子として学び、戦時中は軍に従軍した後、1946年に復員し、正式に濱田の弟子として修行を始めました。修行は厳しいものであり、禅問答に似た教えを受けました。

3年間の修行の後、栃木県立窯業指導所で技師として勤務しながら、古代土器の標本複製の仕事を手伝い、「縄文」への傾倒を深めました。1953年に独立し、初期は濱田と似た作品を作っていましたが、次第に独自のスタイルを確立。1950年代後半からは縄文象嵌技法を取り入れるようになりました。

後年は数々の賞を受賞し、1996年には人間国宝に認定されました。その後も作陶指導や著作活動を行い、2002年には栃木県名誉県民の称号を受けました。

2007年に個展の準備中に体調を崩し入院、同年12月11日に急性腎不全で亡くなりました。享年88歳でした。彼の生涯は民芸と陶芸への深い愛と、技術と美への追求心に溢れていました。

Tatsuzo Shimaoka was born in Tokyo in 1919. Though he attended Tokyo Institute of Technology, his true interest lay in the humanities, and it was due to the trends of the time and his father's advice that he pursued a career as an engineer. During his university years, he awakened to the beauty of folk art and began researching glazes.

From his student days, he studied as a disciple of Shoji Hamada, and after serving in the military during the war, he was demobilized in 1946 and formally began his training under Hamada. The training was strict, and he received teachings similar to Zen questions and answers.

After three years of training, while working as a technician at the Tochigi Prefectural Pottery Training Center, he helped with the replication work of ancient pottery samples, deepening his fascination with "Jomon" culture. In 1953, he became independent, initially creating works similar to Hamada’s, but gradually established his own style. From the late 1950s, he began incorporating Jomon inlay techniques.

In his later years, he won numerous awards, and in 1996 he was recognized as a Living National Treasure. He continued to instruct in pottery making and write books, and in 2002 he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Tochigi Prefecture.

While preparing for a solo exhibition in 2007, he fell ill and was hospitalized, passing away on December 11 of the same year due to acute renal failure. He was 88 years old. His life was filled with a deep love for folk art and pottery, and a relentless pursuit of technique and beauty.
