Sekiho (Shimizu Seinosuke, 1888–1971) – Master Potter of Onko-yaki
Shimizu Seinosuke (1888–1971), known by his artist name Shōkodō Sekiho, was a skilled Japanese potter who studied under Sekisen, a noted ceramic artist.
Sekiho specialized in Onko-yaki, a type of pottery produced in Mino-Akasaka, Gifu Prefecture. This regional ware is especially known for its thin-walled teapots with a distinctive silvery finish, highly prized among collectors and tea practitioners.
The Onko-yaki tradition began in 1860 (Ansei 6) with the establishment of the first kiln in the area. It was further developed through the work of prominent potters such as Shimizu Yūsuke (art name: Sekisen), the younger brother of Shimizu Heishichi, and Kōno Chūji (art name: Taiga), who introduced full-scale production using the potter’s wheel (rokuro).
