Koie Takashi – Innovator and Influencer in Meiji-Era Tokoname Pottery
Koie Takashi, born in 1847 (Kōka 3) in the Owari region, was an influential ceramic artist active during the Meiji period. He was later adopted by Koie Hōju, a pioneering figure in Tokoname ware.
Takashi made significant improvements to his adoptive father's invention of true-yaki ceramic pipes and helped expand their commercial distribution by 1872 (Meiji 5).
In 1877 (Meiji 11), he played a key role in modernizing Tokoname ware by inviting the Chinese ceramic master Kin Shikō (Jin Shiheng) from the Qing dynasty to Japan. Through this cultural exchange, Koie Takashi facilitated the transfer of Yixing (宜興) techniques to notable Tokoname potters such as Sugie Jumon and Ina Chōzō IV, greatly advancing the quality and reputation of Tokoname ceramics.
